Airports and transportation in Barcelona
Before we put on our comfortable walking shoes, we'll need to get to the city center. Once you've arrived at Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat Airport, following the signs will give you no trouble heading to the center of Barcelona. Just in case, here's what you'll find.
There are two terminals at the airport connected by a free shuttle bus and are located just over ten kilometers from Barcelona, so the journey to the center is quick.
The Aerobús bus will take you to Plaza Catalunya in the heart of Barcelona in just over half an hour for €5.90. It's the most popular option and operates from 5:30 a.m. to 1:00 a.m.
If buses are more your thing, you can also take the urban bus number 46, which will take you to Plaza España for less than half the price of the previous one and departs every 15 minutes.
If you want to arrive as quickly as possible, the Rodalies R2 train from Terminal 2 will take you to Sants Station in 20 minutes, and seven minutes later you could be at Passeig de Gràcia.
If you want to experience the metro from the moment you arrive, you can take line L9 to the University Zone, located between Camp Nou and the Royal Palace of Pedralbes for €5.15. Once there, take line 3, the green one, to reach the city center; Plaza Catalunya, in 20 minutes.
The last option is a taxi, which, unlike other major European cities, doesn't have a fixed fare. You can reach your destination in about 25 minutes, and the average cost is around €35, although it will depend on traffic and whether it's nighttime.
You're now in the city center, so how do you get around? Almost however you want, because Barcelona offers every form of public transportation imaginable.
You can get around by metro, train, tram, and bus, as well as bicycles. All are widely used, and there's no particular favorite among those who live and visit Barcelona. Get a season ticket on your T-jove card, with significant discounts for those under 30.
Why is Barcelona perfect for university trips and getaways?
Barcelona is a cosmopolitan metropolis, a truly exciting city for many reasons that make it perfect for living and visiting.
The first reason is its multicultural nature. You'll meet people from all over the world who have come here for a variety of reasons, from cultural vacations to language exchanges. There's no better place in the world to meet people.
Its location is perfect from many perspectives. It's perfect for enjoying a mild Mediterranean climate, which will give you consecutive sunny days with very pleasant temperatures.
In addition, its location helps you connect with other major cities, not only in Spain but throughout Europe as well. Having Barcelona as your base camp is a great idea while you're exploring cities.
The gastronomy is truly spectacular, and its tapas culture, chatting over a beer, combined with the city's great student atmosphere, make it the perfect city, no less.
Must-see excursions and visits on your trip to Barcelona
Your stay in Barcelona requires a good tour of the city's historic center. You have to do it, look for it anywhere, but this should be your first trip to Barcelona.
This way, you'll find your bearings and learn where the most important monuments and sites are. It'll be like placing a compass in your head. It will help you discover the rest of the city later, but you'll know where to go and how.
Plaza de Catalunya, Plaza de España, the Sagrada Familia, Casa Batlló, Park Guell, and the Cathedral are must-see stops that will give you a clear mental image of the city. Getting lost in its streets is also part of the city's charm.
Walks along La Rambla, El Born, Tibidabo, the Gothic Quarter, and the Barrio de Gracia are routes you should take, no excuses. They are pieces of history, pieces of the heart of Barcelona.

Let's take the train or bus and see what's happening around Barcelona. You'll discover how diversity extends far beyond Barcelona, with places as diverse as they are beautiful.
Sitges
One of the best getaways you can take from Barcelona. Internationally known for its film festival and carnival, it boasts a truly spectacular historic center.
You can enjoy its warm beaches in about 40 minutes by train. But it's not all cinema and beaches; don't forget to visit the Maricel Palace, the Church of Sant Bartomeu i Santa Tecla, or the Terramar Gardens.
Montserrat
For the most devout, or those most passionate about nature and religious architecture, this is a must-see. The Montserrat Monastery, built in 1025, awaits on Montserrat Mountain with one of the locals' most beloved religious images: the Virgin of the Black Madonna.
Parque Natural del Montseny
More nature, but this time much wilder. It has been a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve since 1998 and is one of the oldest and most important natural parks in the Catalan region.
And if you're hungry and forgot to bring a sandwich, stop by one of the villages in this magical enclave to sample some local cuisine: Aiguafreda, Sant Hilari Sacalm, or Espinelves.
